Tiemco Shimazaki Leader Greese is a soft, floatant paste made to keep your leader riding high. It slicks the surface, helps it float + mend cleanly, and reduces spray/noise on pickup. Works on nylon and fluorocarbon (FC is naturally denser but the coating still helps the upper sections float).
Best uses
- Dry-fly presentations (rivers): grease the butt & mid-section so they float and mend; leave the last 60–90 cm (2–3 ft) ungreased so your tippet sinks and doesn’t flash near the fly.
- Loch-style/stillwater dries: grease most of the leader to keep droppers high and manage long casts.
- “Greased-line” swings (spiders/soft hackles): a lightly greased butt/mid keeps the line riding the film for a smooth, controlled swing.
- Cold water days: reduces water drag and line stick, making mends easier.
How to apply (30 seconds)
- Dry the leader with a cloth.
- Tiny dab on fingers—think rice-grain.
- Pinch-draw the butt and mid sections through your fingers to lay a thin film (avoid the final tippet unless you intentionally want it to float).
- Buff quickly with a dry patch so it’s slick, not gloopy. Reapply after a few hours or heavy mending.
Do’s & don’ts
- Do keep it off the last 2–3 ft for stealthy dry-fly drifts (unless you’re fishing dries on droppers/waking patterns).
- Do re-wipe and re-apply after a dunk or a long fight.
- Don’t mix with a sinking gel on the same section—clean first, then choose one.
- Don’t overload; excess paste attracts dust and can kink fine tippet.
Bottom line: Shimazaki Leader Grease is a simple way to get higher-floating, quieter leaders and cleaner mends. Grease the butt & mid, degrease the last few feet, and you’ll see more stable dry-fly drifts and takes
